Áras an Uachtaráin: the official residence of the President of Ireland, situated in Phoenix Park, Dublin

 

Bunreacht na hÉireann: the Constitution of Ireland, enacted by referendum of the people on 1 July 1937

 

Cathaoirleach: the Chairman of Seanad Éireann, elected by votes of members

 

Ceann Comhairle: the Chairman of Dáil Éireann, elected by votes of the members

 

Córas Iompair Éireann: public transport company established by the Transport Acts of 1944 and 1950 to manage the state railways, buses and canals

 

Dáil Éireann: the lower house of the Oireachtas

 

Oireachtas: the national parliament, which comprises the two houses of parliament (Dáil Éireann and Seanad Éireann) and the President

 

Seanad Éireann: the Senate, the upper house of the Oireachtas

 

Soloheadbeg (Solloghodbeg): location in County Tipperary where on 21 January 1919 an ambush by members of the Irish Republican Army led to the deaths of two members of the Royal Irish Constabulary and marked the beginning of what became known as the War of Independence
