April 2009

(Above) Department of External Affairs memorandum dated 13 April 1967 approving the imposition of economic sanctions by the Irish Government against Southern Rhodesia which in November 1965 had made a Unilateral Declaration of Independence (UDI) from Britain. The Rhodesian Front party which announced the UDI, was opposed to black majority rule in the then British colony and their action was condemned by the United Nations as that by a racist minority.

The memorandum above outlines the sanctions imposed by a number of departments within the Irish Government against the so-called “Salisbury Régime” and observes that they echo those already adopted by the UN.
