June 2008

(Above) Copy of a cablegram sent by the Irish Legation in Washington to the Department of External Affairs on 28 June 1941 which includes extracts from President Franklin D Roosevelt’s statement at a press conference on 27 June relating to the possibility of sending rifles to Ireland on foot of an assurance that the Irish would defend themselves against German attack. He then declares that the US government has not received any such guarantee from the Irish side and denies that the US availed of the opportunity to use Irish naval bases.
