July 2008

(Above) Garda Síochána report dated 2 July 1934 regarding a fracas at a Fine Gael meeting in Ballina, county Mayo on 1 July 1934. According to the report, the meeting which was addressed by General Eoin O’Duffy, attracted hostility and Gardaí had to intervene to break up the Blueshirts and the crowd gathered outside. O’Duffy is reported to have made charges against the Gardaí on the grounds of negligence and although the latter restored order, the forthcoming Blueshirt dance in the local hall was cancelled.
