(Above) Memorandum dated 26 August 1940 in which Kevin O’Haugh, Attorney-General, applies to the Justice of the District Court to have two men – charged with conspiring to secure the escape of prisoners from Cork Male Prison – sent for trial to the Special Criminal Court under the Offences against the State Act, 1939. Mr O’Haugh considers the ordinary courts to be “inadequate to secure the effective administration of justice…in relation to the trial of the above-named Denis Joseph O’Sullivan and Cornelius Byrd”.
