(Above) Letter dated 15 October 1958 from the Secretary to the President to Liam Ó Buachalla, Cathaoirleach of the Seanad (Chair of the Senate) informing him of President Seán T. O’Kelly’s intention to visit Rome for six days. Although the purpose of the visit is not alluded to in the letter, President O’Kelly visited Rome to attend the funeral of Pope Pius XII who died on 9 October 1958. In the case of illness or absence from the State of the President, the Presidential Commission performs his duties and functions and so the secretary undertakes to inform Mr Ó Buachalla who is a Commission member, if it will be necessary to convene the Commission in the absence of President O’Kelly.
