(Above) Letter dated 8 February 1941 from James J Burke, Secretary of Cumann Sean Óglaigh 1916 (1916 Veterans’ Association) to President Douglas Hyde regarding a resolution passed at the association’s AGM on 31 January 1941. The resolution calls on the Government to declare 24 April a National Holiday to be designated “Irish Independence Day” in order to “perpetuate the memory of the commencement of the final phase in Ireland’s struggle for Independence” especially given that 1941 marks the 25th anniversary of the Easter Rising.
