(Above) Cover note dated 24 July 1973 from the Secretary of the Department of the Taoiseach to the Secretary of the Department of Finance enclosing an invoice for a floral wreath from President Eamon de Valera for the State funeral of Mrs Kathleen Clarke in October 1972. Widow of Tom Clarke, the first signatory of the 1916 Proclamation, Mrs Clarke was a founder member of Cumann na mBan in 1914 and fought in the 1916 Rising and War of Independence. A member of the 2nd and 5th Dála and the Seanad from 1928 to 1936, she was Dublin’s first female Lord Mayor during the years 1939-1941 – she died aged 94 in Liverpool, survived by her two sons.
