April 2005

(Above) Department of External Affairs (now the Department of Foreign Affairs) note dated 24 April 1968 detailing a telephone conversation between the Secretary of the Department, Mr Hugh McCann, and the British Ambassador to Ireland, Sir Andrew Gilchrist. The latter is making a complaint about the guests – Cathal Goulding, then Chief of Staff of the IRA and Richard Behal – featured on the Irish chatshow, the “Late Late Show” in late April 1968 and the presumption that such “individuals should have been given the opportunity to appeal to the people over the Head of Parliament”.
