National Archives’ responsibility for archives

Responsibility for other records

In addition to our responsibilities for Departmental records, we have overall statutory responsibility for Church of Ireland parish registers of marriages which pre-date 1 April 1845 and baptisms and burials which pre-date 1 January 1871, declared to be public records by the Acts of 1875 and 1876. Until recently, almost all of the surviving registers were still held by the parish clergy but many of them have now been transferred to the Representative Church Body Library.

The National Archives Act also permits us to acquire records from private sources, while Section 14 designates two places of deposit for the archives of the Geological Survey of Ireland and the archives of the Department of Defence and the Defence Forces. The archives are available for consultation under conditions similar to those obtaining in the National Archives and researchers should contact the relevant institutions in writing or by phone in advance of their visit, using the contact details below.
